ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT

Campus Security

The mandate of Campus Security is to promote a safe and welcoming environment that recognizes and is respectful of the diverse nature of the Queen's community. To meet this mandate, we provide the following services:

  • 24 hour / 365 day emergency response capability
  • security patrols after normal working hours
  • a crime prevention and security awareness program, including an informative Web page and security bulletin boards
  • provision of extra security personnel for special events
  • alarm monitoring
  • assistance to other campus services such as the AMS Walkhome program and the AMS Student Constables
  • advice and assistance to all members of the Queen's community on any security related matter
  • other security related services as required

Community members can report any hate incidents (propaganda, slurs, harassment, email harassment, etc.) to Campus Security. Posters, email/phone messages, or other evidence of hate material should not be deleted or destroyed until Security staff have had a chance to review them. In cases of hate propaganda, especially involving organized groups such as the Heritage Front, Security will forward copies of the offensive material to the Kingston Police. In cases involving discrimination or harassment, victims may also be referred, with their consent, to the Human Rights Office.

Kingston Police
In cooperation with the community, the Kingston Police provides police services which contribute to the maintenance of peace, order, and public safety. The Kingston Police values the diversity of the community and the right of all people to be treated with dignity and respect. STOPIT! Program

E-mail harassment is a growing problem at Queen's and other universities. The Criminal Code applies to e-mail, and that violations can be turned over to the local police for investigation. In some cases of e-mail harassment, offenders have been asked withdraw from the university.

STOPIT! is a joint initiative of Information Technology Services, the Human Rights Office, Queen's Security, and the Dean of Student Affairs.

Have you received and email that was unwelcome? Has it affected your ability to work or study? Would a reasonable person of your gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation find it unacceptable?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, here's what to do:

  • Do not ignore it, and do not erase the e-mail message(s) from your Inbox - it contains information that may identify the person responsible.
  • Forward the offending e-mail to: stopit@post.queensu.ca
  • If you feel threatened, call Campus Security at 533-6111.
  • To discuss the harassment or to file a complaint, call the Human Rights Office at 533-6886, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.
  • For help from Information Technology Services (ITS), call 533-2244 Monday to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.

It is also a violation of the Criminal Code to use someone else's name or computer user ID to impersonate them in sending e-mail. If you have received e-mail of this type, preserve a copy of the message as it contains information that may help identify the actual sender.
